Mr Sohail Rizvi is a leading HR professional in Pakistan and is working as head of learning and development at Allied Bank. He has recorded a course “Tips to manage and maximize your career” for Amal Academy.

In this course, he talks about 9 tips to maximize the chances of getting selected for a job and being the most valuable team player at your job place. I found these tips very helpful and applicable to every person’s life with some modifications according to the situation.

One of my roommates, Sadia Api is in her 7th semester of BS(Hons)in Textile Designing. She is very conscious about her career and is always asking for tips to improve hersel. So, I shared these 6 tips by Atif sb to help her manage and maximize her career.

Following are the six tips:

1. Do an internship before pursuing a higher degree to confirm if you like that field/industry

2. Don’t do PhD if you want to be an entrepreneur or work in corporate sector

3. Spend at least one year in your first job

4. Find your passion and align it with your career

5. Decisions are very unique to each person, what’s right for one isn’t right for the other

6. Own your decisions: Don’t let other people make decisions for you and don’t blame anyone else

As Sadia api is from textile designing which is a very practical field. I suggested her to do an internship before taking admission in M Phil because it will help her to understand what kinds of skills she needs to develop during her higher studies. It will also help her to understand the market demand.

At various times Sadia has shared with me her goal of getting PhD. After listening to Atif sb I talked to her about it and shared the pros and cons of PhD.

She told me how PhD can open door of success for her as their thesis is based on some practical work and market has a huge demand for it. Furthermore, she said, “Come ‘on Ameezay who will give me a job after MPhil with so much talent in the market” . I calmed her down and suggested her to do an internship and then take her M.phil and PhD degree.

During this conversation, she told me that she had a passion to become a microbiologist but her mother wanted her to opt textile designing. There are number of such cases in Pakistan. It opened a new debate. I tried to convince her that a person should opt a career which is aligned with his passion so she should shift to science by taking bsc exams. But she is very reluctant to take such bold step. She said she doesn’t want to waste her time now as she has developed her skills. We also talked about the importance of owing the decision.
